I was there a few weeks ago and had the same impression: there are a lot of vegan places there now. 20 years ago I found it hard to eat vegetarian in Japan, but now there are many choices not only for vegetarian but also vegan, in Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. It has finally has caught on there. One I really liked in Kyoto was Vegginy, a block from city hall. It's downstairs from street and easy to miss--someone posted a helpful picture in google maps for it, use that. Another is Matsuromi Ya for genuine shojin ryori, traditional japanese vegetarian food. It is in the ground floor of the Cultural Museum of Kyoto. Craft beer is also really big now in Japan.
